I’ll tell you what Gunther von Hagen does… he plastinates the hell out of your ass and puts that bad boy up on display for the entire world to see.
I had a chance to slide by the Body Worlds exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science yesterday. And to say that it was pretty damn fascinating would be an understatement. I was blown away.
When I was young, my grandfather gave me a set of his medical books as I began to show interest in drawing. A majority of those books contained intricate and detailed illustrations of the human body, and they were my first exposure to human anatomy. I remember one book in particular which contained a large volume of medical drawings done by da Vinci… I particularly enjoyed this one the most, partly because at the time I was incapable of creating work with anything other than a pencil and the drawings just simply looked cool. Being as young as I was, I didn’t realize the importance of understanding human anatomy, especially as I was slowly developing the unconscious decision to become an artist. Like most kids, I grew up just happy drawing Transformers and anatomically impossible comic book characters.
Seeing the Body Worlds exhibit yesterday took me back to the first time I opened up those medical books. It was like being an intrigued 11 year old all over again. I even broke down and bought a book about the exhibit which contained even more images of work not shown on display. It was the best $25 I’ve spent in quite a while. I’m definitely going to have to make another trip before the exhibit leaves Denver in July. By then the crowds will probably taper down and I might be able to squeeze in some drawing time while I’m there (since they don’t allow photographs).
