Well, it's been a while since I updated my blog so I guess this is as good a time as any to let you know what I've been up to:
I've updated my site at
www.joelcarlo.net with brand new work! New images have been added to all of the albums and I am in the process of creating an additional section for tutorials in both .pdf and streaming movie formats. Slide by and let me know what you think.
This month,
ImagineFX magazine has kindly released the first of a three part series on figure drawing essentials which I was commissioned to write and illustrate beginning in
Issue 007. The workshop is a primer for beginner and intermediate artists interested in honing their skills at painting the human form. It is an incredible honor for me to be able to display my work in such an outstanding magazine and share space with the likes of
Linda Bergkvist,
Fredrik Ödman,
Alan Lee, as well as many more world-class artists. Issue007 of ImagineFX is currently available UK side and will be available stateside next month. For more information about ImagineFX, please visit
www.imaginefx.com.
My good friend Igor and I headed out last month to
Gnomon's 3rd workshop weekend held in Hollywood, CA. We had an opportunity to meet and watch some of the most venerated artists in the industry share their work and knowledge… talk about inspirational! Highlights included having the opportunity to chat with some of my favorite concept artists such as
Hong Ly,
David Levy,
Thiery Doizon, and
Justin Sweet. It was an absolute blast and I'm looking forward to doing it again.
I am currently participating in Conceptart.org's
Last Man Standing 2 Challenge! The LMS2 challenge is a sort of a death match for artists where only the absolute best work perseveres. There are 271 contenders over 4 rounds, culminating into 396 new pieces of artwork and only 1 winner. Round 1 is currently being judged. For more info, click here:

A handful of friends and I have set up an online networking resource for Colorado artists. The site is geared toward promoting traditional and digital art, and while we are a relatively small community at the moment, our main goal is to create an online community for professional Colorado artists to network and share their work. If you are an artist living in Colorado and would like to learn more, please visit our online community at
www.denverchapter.com.
Well, that's it! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank some great people that I have worked with or inspired me over the last couple of weeks. Big thanks go out to: Rob Carney of ImagineFX, Rebecca Kimmel, Hong Ly, David Levy, The Ayzenberg Group, Igor Tkac, Shane Grayzek, Craig Turley, and all my friends at both here at CGSociety and Conceptart.org. Thanks! - Joel
